Johan Albrecht Becker

Text Randi Gaustad

Johann Albrecht Becker had also worked at Nøstetangen. He was fully trained as an engraver when he arrived from Saxony in 1767. After 6 years, he left Nøstetangen and set up a glass shop and engraver's workshop in Drammen. Most of the engraving on Norwegian wine glasses in the 18th century was carried out by Becker or his sons. The most common are the owner's initials in a characteristic Rococo-style frame or cartouche, often with a crown on top. There could also be two initials bound together in a double cartouche, presumably commissioned for a wedding or engagement.

Johann Gottlob Meer was employed in the engraver's workshop from 1760 to 1767, but he did not sign his works and his style is not known.
